Rating Your Own Recipe

March 7, 2011

I love  I have found some really great recipes there, but it’s also good for a laugh.  I can’t think of a single one that didn’t include reviews like this:

“This recipe is outstanding!  Five stars!  I did change a few things.  I omitted the jalapeno peppers, doubled the butter, added some garlic salt, seared the meat first, cut the amount of lime in half, and added a cup of cream.  Great recipe!”

I always think, “You just rated your own recipe!”  I think the whole point of the reviews is for people to know whether the recipe is going to turn out exactly as written.  Cracks me up.  I do use people’s tips if multiple people agree.  For instance, if 5 people say there was way too much lime in the Key lime pie, I will take their advice, but I’m not going to 5 star the recipe if I have to change it.

So Saturday night, a friend told me about a recipe for brownies that included beans.  She said they were nasty.  I told her I was going to review it and write:

“These brownies were awesome!  Five stars!  All I did was omit the beans and add oil and eggs!  I’m definitely making these again!”

I also love the people who don’t follow the recipe and then complain about it turning out horrible.  What’s your favorite recipe?  Please share.  Also, if you run into any really funny reviews, please send them my way.
